In the context of the total renewal of the Carenage quay wall and infrastructure as described under Lot 3, it is proposed that berthing be developed for 12 to 14 for mega or super yacht’s on the south-east side of the Carenage.
The time is ripe for Grenada to capitalize on this fast growing market, with its only competition in the Caribbean coming from Saint Marten. With Grenada historically less affected by the hurricane season, this provides a major advantage over Saint Marten. The facility not only has the potential to boost Grenada as a mega yacht destination, but also has the potential to transform the Carenage into a very lively attraction, comparable with the most famous Mediterranean Ports.
Presently, the south-east quay wall of the Carenage requires improvement. Worse yet, the pedestrian environment along this side of the water’s edge is very limited, the pedestrian area is very narrow, and there are no amenities nor attractions for tourist or residents alike. The construction of the mega-yacht berths, coupled with an expansion of the promenade along the water’s edge will further improve the attractiveness of the Carenage and create a viable, attractive, pedestrian linkage along the total water’s edge of the Carenage basin.
Proposed improvements include a new quay wall, 16 mega-yacht berths consisting of 6 berths for mega-yachts of up to 70 meters in over-all-length, and 10 berths for mega-yachts of up to 45 meters in over-all-length. A waterfront promenade will connect the Old Port Site to the centre of St. George. A public plaza with play ground areas is proposed at the north end, emphasizing and enlarging the existing open space at this sector of the Carenage. Landscape improvements will make the area more attractive, and new lighting and pedestrian amenities such as seating areas will attract both tourists and local residents.
A total of 60 new parking spaces will be provided. These will be 20 on-street parking spaces, and to serve the mega-yacht users approximately 40 spaces distributed to the berths.
