Construction of New Commercial Port

The St. Georges’ Revitalization Project proposes the construction of a new commercial port on the north side of St. Georges.  This new “fit for purpose” commercial port will be developed by creating a new land area just north of the St. John River. The new land area would provide a clear spillway channel to allow the St. John River to continue its outfall into the Caribbean Sea.

The construction of a new commercial port, in conjunction with the proposed vehicular access improvements will improve the urban environment of the city of St. George.  The port and the proposed tunnel from Tanteen to the St. John’s River will allow for truck traffic to by-pass the centre of the city and allow the existing valuable lands occupied by the present port to be redeveloped in a manner more complementary to the commercial, residential and tourism vocation of the site.

The total land area will comprise approximately 4.5 hectares.  The new port is proposed as a “state of the art facility” that will include the following:

  • A total area of 4,5ha, completely paved;
  • Storm water drainage and public lighting;
  • 350meter long deep water quay wall, with water depth of 10meters;
  • 1,000square meters of new office space/building for Grenada Port Authorities;
  • 2,000square meters of warehouses;
  • All necessary utilities for adequate and modern port operations;
  • Breakwater and shore protection are included.

In the development of the existing cruise facilities, nautical and wave studies were undertaken to assure the feasibility of the project. Because of the proximity of the new commercial port to the cruise facility, these studies will be utilized to properly design the new facility. Great care will be taken to ascertain that all environmental concerns are addressed.
