Old Port Town Development

Redevelopment of existing port area into residential, retail and tourism entertainment area. Quay wall to be redeveloped specifically as a destination and home port for windjammer and tall ships

The existing port area will be available for development once the delivery of the new Commercial Port has occurred. This presents an enormous potential for the redevelopment of the existing port area into a lively neighbourhood of residential apartments, shops, entertainment and various tourism facilities. The “Old Port” may also-- in the future--- serve as a terminal for windjammers and tall sailing ships, creating a big tourism attraction of its own. Operational aspects of these ships should remain in the hands of the Grenada Ports Authorities.

The total area available for redevelopment is 4,5 hectares. It is proposed that approximately 290 “Old Port Warehouse Style” apartments and town homes be constructed.  The total program will also include approximately 5,000 square meters of retail, entertainment and cultural space, as well as a 100 room hotel to allow for the Windjammer Home Port development and the location of a business hotel right in heart of St. George. Additionally, public buildings, the Post Office and the Public Workers Compound, will be included within the proposed development.

As illustrated in the drawings, the Old Port Site will be constructed as a village to reflect a very strong pedestrian character, a walk-able neighbourhood that will anchor the south west side of Wharf Road and the Carenage and also form the transition from the tight urban activity of the Carenage to the contemplative and natural beauty of the Blue Lagoon area.

The redeveloped Old Port Site will also create a more attractive environment for the Grenada Yacht Club allowing easier pedestrian access to this important facility through the pedestrian promenade, parks and plazas proposed as part of the old Port Site redevelopment.  The site plan illustrates a central commercial area with sufficient parking to serve its own needs and those of the Windjammer Cruise Terminal proposed as part of the project.
