Press Release
Zublin Updates the Public on the Renaissance Project
January 6, 2010: Zublin Grenada Limited, developers of the St. George’s Cruise Port, and the Esplanade and Bruce Street Malls wishes to clarify its position regarding the implementation and discussion currently taking place on the St. George’s Renaissance Project. In this regard Zublin wishes to state the following:
- The St. George’s Renaissance project has its foundations in the St. George’s Revitalization Project which was proposed in 2004 to the then Government of Grenada.
- After taking Office in July 2008, the new Government invited Zublin for a consultation about continued development of the cruise tourism market. As a result of these discussions, Government asked Zublin for a proposal which would address tourism development.
- Zublin revamped the St. George’s Revitalization project and renamed it the St. George’s Renaissance project. The Renaissance project addresses cruise tourism development, urban renewal, protection of our heritage, generation of foreign direct investment and the promotion of culture.
- This project was presented to the ENTIRE Cabinet in the first week of September 2009 in a session which lasted about one hour. During this session the Cabinet posed questions on all aspects of the project including the casino and modifications were made based on the input from cabinet members.
- After the Cabinet meeting, Zublin was directed by the Prime Minister as Chairman of the Cabinet to hold wide stakeholder consultations.
- Zublin has begun these stakeholder consultations and has presented the project and gotten very useful and encouraging feedback from the following groups: The Taxi Association, the Chamber of Commerce, the Media Workers Association, the Tour Operators, the Board of Tourism, and the Carenage Concerned Citizens Association.
- As part of these stakeholder consultations, Zublin also invited the region’s leading casino gambling experts from the University of the West Indies Professor Ian Boxill and his team to give two seminars. One of these seminars was held at the Grenada Trade Centre and broadcast live on television and the other was held in Grenville at the Bain’s Hall.
- Cabinet informed Zublin in November 2009 that a Committee had been established chaired by renowned Grenadian Architect Nigel Renwick to review the project and to give recommendations to Cabinet. Zublin viewed this as a very positive move and has up to now cooperated fully with this committee. Zublin has presented the project to the Cabinet appointed Committee, and has disclosed all documents and other related material concerning the project to the committee.
Zublin looks forward to continued discussions on the project and the eventual implementation of the project. Zublin has done its research and expects this project to inject 450 million EC dollars into the economy, double Grenada’s cruise tourism arrivals and provide about two thousand new sustainable jobs to Grenadians at all levels and in all sectors of the economy.
Zublin regrets that it is being accused by a few people of pushing for its own project against the will of the people of Grenada. Nothing is further from the truth! Everything Zublin has done so far has been discussed with the Cabinet.
Finally, as a developer, Zublin understands that projects of the scale as proposed will never materialize without vast public support.
