The Government of Grenada has entered into discussions with one of Grenada’s most established developers Zublin Grenada, to begin a process of urban renewal, commercial real estate development and land reclamation in St. George’s.
The project is aimed at fuelling economic growth while preserving and protecting important historic buildings, landmarks and symbols. The project is considered as ideal for establishing a public/private sector partnership and well over 450 million EC dollars will be invested.
Under the project St. George’s will be transformed says Hon. Joseph Gilbert, Minister of Works, Physical Planning Public Utilities and the Environment. “Government views this project as one of the most important projects for the people of Grenada. At a time when the world is facing the biggest economic crisis in history, Government is aggressively seeking avenues which will stimulate the economy and improve the quality of life for our people, “Minister Gilbert said. “The St. George’s Renaissance Project will invest in Grenada’s heritage; enhance and increase tourism revenues; and create conditions for overall growth in the economy. “
Under the project Government will work with Zublin on the following:
Minister of Tourism and Foreign Affairs Hon. Peter David says he is particularly excited about this project. “This has been one of my goals since I was elected as the representative for the Town of St. George’s. Our capital has tremendous potential and I have been working hard to see this potential realised, “says David. “ The value of this project for tourism is tremendous. The improvement of the historic sites in St. George’s and the creation of an additional cruise ship jetty will make Grenada one of the most competitive cruise and tourism destinations in the region. We expect that with this development we can attract at least 100 cruise ships which will mean well over 300 thousand more tourists.”
Commenting on the project Zublin CEO Hendrick Van Dijk said that his company was pleased to be partnering with Government. “The Government came to us requesting that we come up with ideas. We have consolidated our ideas in a plan and have come back to Government with the St. George’s Renaissance Project. We are very confident that the St. George’s Renaissance project will be extremely successful.”
