It boasts many modern banks and banking related businesses, commercial, wholesale and retail stores, a modern bus terminal, a high quality fish market and an ultra modern cruise ship terminal, which is said to be one of the best in the region. St. George’s is also more noticeably characterized by a stunningly beautiful Carenage waterfront area which dates back to the 18th century; a remarkable feat of old world engineering, the Sendall Tunnel; one of the most colourful market squares in the region and a sloping hillside landscape which is unlike any other in the Caribbean.
This blend of modern and antique live side by side in St. George’s but critics have argued that the old is now being sacrificed for the new. After being elected to office in July 2008, the Grenada Government promised to do all in its power to preserve Grenada’s unique heritage while still continuing the development which brings in income and jobs.
Driven by the need to find solutions to create a turnaround during these austere economic times, the Government entered into discussions with one of Grenada’s most established developers, Zublin Grenada. Zublin after in depth discussions with Government, proposed a process of urban renewal, development and land reclamation aimed at fuelling economic growth while preserving and protecting important historic buildings, landmarks and symbols. The project being proposed is called the St. George’s Renaissance Project
