Benefits of:

The St. George's Renaissance Project

Without doubt this will improve the attractiveness of the town of St. George’s and Grenada significantly as a tourist destination
  • A new vendors market means that the old market place can be restored to its original historic setting.
  • A unique Spice Market will be created in the old market square area.
  • A new vendors market is also badly needed as vendors and customers need better access to facilities and more space in the market. This new market will provide logistical advantages as it will be located in the vicinity of the existing meat and fish markets and the bus terminal.
  • A pedestrian Sendall Tunnel is an attraction on its own. The Old English military tunnel will give safe pedestrian access to the Carenage and historic features like the financial complex, museum, library etc. This will no doubt enhance the historic heritage and help to protect the legacy of the town.
  • The enhanced St. George’s will improve the urban experience for Grenadians. The older generation will be reminded of the old glory days of St. George’s and the younger generation can enjoy the modern comforts while being educated about the past.
  • The aesthetically enhanced St. George’s will serve as an attraction for cruise and stay over tourists. The enhanced Carenage and market square with its spice market can be properly marketed as unique tourism features. The restoration of the old historic sites will act as a catalyst to protect and restore many other kindred sites around Grenada.
  • A second cruise jetty together with the enhancement of shopping facilities and tourist entertainment makes Grenada far more attractive to a broader range of tourists. This will further improve the competitive position of Grenada as a southern Caribbean cruise destination
  • With the addition of the second cruise jetty Grenada can attract up to 300,000 more cruise tourists annually, if this is combined with an extremely focused and comprehensive cruise industry marketing plan.
  • Improved traffic flow will be created by the new ring road. There will be less congestion more parking. A dedicated emergency access road to and from the hospital will be created which will enhance the provision of hospital and emergency services. A new taxi dispatch area and hospital parking will also be built just off of the ring road.
SPECIFIC ECONOMIC BENEFITS AS RELATED TO FINANCIAL CRISIS

The Government and the Developer are convinced that a proactive approach is needed in order to stem the current global economic crisis. The improvement of facilities; the creation of new tourism related entertainment options; and an extremely focused marketing plan are some of the important steps needed to give an immediate boost to cruise and stay over tourists.

The economic impact of this plan in these difficult times is enormous:

  • The total investment in this project will be over 450 million EC dollars. This capital expenditure will stimulate the economy in many sectors including but not limited to construction, tourism, agriculture, commerce and other related services.
  • The all important construction industry will be given a huge boost by providing 350 jobs over a period of three years
  • Once started the project will provide immediate relief to the deteriorating employment situation.
  • Information gathered from widely available tourism statistics and data shows that 300 thousand extra passengers can create at least 2000 new sustainable jobs. Every extra ship creates 10-15 labour places, so in total 1500 to 2000 new jobs will be created. With an average spend of around 200 EC dollars per person the additional passengers are expected to generate just over 30 million EC dollars annually.
The hotel, casino and convention complex will generate substantial and sustainable revenue in the consolidated fund and will create more than 350 work places.
